Our vision is to actively promote and contribute to the responsible management of marine resources, and to act as a centre for education, conservation and research.
At the heart of the ISH’s biological research is the cultivation of juvenile scampi in captivity, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the creature’s habits, and to investigate the potential for stock enhancement, ranching and aquaculture.
Our mission is to promote the concept of sustainability in fisheries and aquaculture, and to improve the long term productivity of the scampi fishery for all.
As a not for profit organisation ISH will be funded by company sponsorship, public and private funding, donations, admission fees and shop sales from its visitor centre. It is intended that a charitable trust will be formed.
The largest fishery in the world of this species exists in the seas around the British Isles and the Republic of Ireland. The Hatchery also intends to include the species Metanephrops within its scope of activity.
Whitby in North Yorkshire will be the base for the ISH. Whitby is an important fishing port, with several vessels dedicated to catching scampi. The high number of visitors to Whitby will provide an ideal opportunity for the Hatchery to communicate its work and raise funds through a visitor centre.
A Hull University PhD student, Emi Katoh, is already actively working on the feasibility of rearing scampi in captivity.
It is envisaged that this project will continue and build on her research.
